How to Ask for Sources From AI
How to request sources, citations, and verification without accepting fake references.
The common situation
You ask for sources and the AI provides links, citations, titles, or publication names. Some are useful, but some may be incomplete or wrong.
Common reasons this happens
- Some AI tools can browse or search; others cannot.
- A model may generate plausible citations from memory without verification.
- Source quality varies widely.
- The AI may not know whether you need official, academic, news, or practical sources.
- Citation formatting can look authoritative even when details need checking.
What you can try safely
- Ask for official or primary sources where possible.
- Ask the AI to separate sources it actually checked from background knowledge.
- Open and verify important sources yourself.
- For current facts, use live sources or official pages.
- Do not publish citations that you have not checked.
Prompt repair rule: state the task, relevant context, desired format, boundaries and verification needs without adding private information.
What this does not necessarily mean
A citation-looking answer is not automatically verified. Treat citations as leads until checked.
When official support is the right path
Source errors are usually an output-quality issue, not an account support issue.
