How to Get a Better Summary From AI
How to ask AI for useful summaries that preserve meaning and avoid over-compression.
The common situation
You ask for a summary, but the AI leaves out important details, changes the tone, or makes the text too vague.
Common reasons this happens
- The prompt may not say what audience or purpose the summary serves.
- The AI may compress too aggressively.
- Important details may be buried in the original text.
- The source may contain technical, legal, or factual nuance.
- The requested summary length may be too short for the content.
What you can try safely
- State whether you want a short summary, detailed summary, or executive brief.
- Ask for key facts, dates, names, numbers, and caveats to be preserved.
- Request separate sections for “main point,” “details,” and “uncertainties.”
- For sensitive material, compare the summary with the original.
- Ask the AI not to add facts that are not in the source.
Prompt repair rule: state the task, relevant context, desired format, boundaries and verification needs without adding private information.
What this does not necessarily mean
A weak summary does not always mean the AI cannot summarize. It may need clearer instructions about what matters.
